PIJ denounces killing of Egyptian border security guards in Sinai

Egyptian border guards
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) Movement has condemned the killing of 16 Egyptian border security guards near the Sinai border with Israel.

Only the Zionist Israeli regime that makes efforts to sow seeds of discord between the Palestinian and Egyptian people benefits an attack on Egyptian security forces, the PIJ said in a statement on Sunday.

The movement also offered condolences to the families of the victims and the Egyptian people and government over the deadly incident.

Unknown gunmen attacked Egyptian security guards at a checkpoint near the Karm Abu Salem border crossing near the Sinai border with Israel on Sunday, killing 16 guards.

The militants, who were wearing traditional Bedouin clothing, seized two armored vehicles and quickly drove off the scene.

Witnesses said the militants also fired rocket-propelled grenades at the Egyptian army checkpoint.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas condemned the “ugly crime” and extended “condolences to the families of the victims, and to the Egyptian leadership and the Egyptian people.”

“The border between Egypt and Gaza is protected. We closed the tunnels to prevent anyone from escaping (into Gaza) and we have put our forces on alert,” a Hamas official declared.

Egyptian Presidnet Mohamed Morsi also denounced the attack, saying that the perpetrators of the attack will pay a high price for the criminal act.
