Netanyahu pushes for more authority to launch war against Iran: Mofaz

Mofaz
Israeli opposition leader Shaul Mofaz has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of seeking expanded authority in a bid to overcome security leaders’ opposition to an attack on Iran.

The Israeli cabinet on Sunday approved the expansion of prime minister’s powers in decision-making process after several changes were made to the cabinet protocol.

It is the first time that changes are made to the Israeli cabinet procedures.

The amendments give Netanyahu the power to set the agenda for ministerial committee meetings and calling meetings on certain issues or cancelling meetings.

The changes also allow the prime minister to submit an issue for a vote several times until it is passed; alternatively, he can keep an issue off the table at his sole discretion. They would also allow him to win immediate agreement for a military attack on Iran.

Last week, Labor party Shelly Yechimovich criticized Netanyahu’s request for changes as anti-democratic and warned that granting the Prime Minister the powers he requests would lead the country to a ”one-man government”.

The US, Israel and their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Based on the allegation, they have also repeatedly threatened Tehran with the “option” of a military strike.

Tehran has time and again rejected the allegations and asserted its full entitlement to the nuclear rights of a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

Iranian officials have promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.
