Five members of the security forces, including a one-star general and a colonel, have been killed in separate attacks targeting the Iraqi police and army.

In the deadliest attack of the day, three policemen were killed and six others wounded when their convoy hit a roadside bomb in the city of Kirkuk, Police Commander Sarhad Qadir said on Wednesday, AP reported.

In another incident, unidentified gunmen opened fire on Brigadier General Nadhum Tayeh’s car as he was driving to work early in the day in Baghdad. He died on the spot.

The assailants fled the scene and their whereabouts remain unknown.

Hours later, authorities said an off-duty army colonel was killed in a roadside bombing in northern Baghdad.

Security forces are a prime target for militants seeking to shed blood and create chaos in Iraq.
