AS Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, that claimed responsibility for the horrific violence in Quetta on Saturay, strikes again and again in Balochistan, there may be a temptation to regard it as an out-of-control problem in an out-of-control backwater. But LJ is part of a continuum of militancy and extremism that has a long history and an ever more threatening future a threat to all of Pakistan, not just particular regions.

The history of LJ itself underlines the complexity of the threat from militancy today: what began as an anti-Shia agenda and targeted killings has morphed into an expansive list of targets, some seemingly picked at random and without much concern about whether women or children are direct victims.

There is the LJ in Balochistan, which is alleged to have developed links with the Baloch separatists.

Thereis the LJin the tdbal areas, which has longstanding ties to Al Qaeda and now the TTP. There is the LJ in Punjab, which continues to grow and develop its network inside the umbrella Punjabi Taliban. Taken together, they pose a formidable threat across the country, not just Balochistan. And LJis only one aspect of a multidimensional and multifaceted militancy threat.

The pervasiveness of the threat does not, however, mean that a modular, regional approach to countering it cannot be implemented. In Balochistan, LJ`s rise is intrinsically linked to a security policy that is controlled and directed by the army-ledsecurity establishment.

The space for non-state actors` singular obsession with crushing the Baloch insurgency through violence meant that other non-state actors were able to take advantage of the state`s focus elsewhere.

Even worse, there are allegations that the obsession with crushing the Baloch insurgency also led to encouraging pro-state Baloch militants who have their own agendas, including developing ties with LJ.

The Baloch separatists remain a problem the shocking destruction in Ziarat on Saturday is evidence enough but state policy is an even bigger one. Where a political problem the Baloch insurgency is being dealt with by brute force, the problem that does require an iron fist LJ is being left largely unaddressed. Both policies, extreme action against Baloch separatists and extreme inaction against LJ, must change andforthatareckoning with army-led security policy is needed first.

Beyond Balochistan and LJ, the bigger picture is almost as bleak. The transition to democracy may appear on track but the politicians have so far made no effort to reach for the holy grail: national security and foreign policy. The euphemistically termed non-state actors cannot and must not be elements of this country`s national security and foreign policy because they are the single greatest threat to Pakistan`s security and relations with the world. Will the army listen?

QUETTA: Intelligence officials revealed today that a female suicide bomber carried out the first attack on a bus carrying students of Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University earlier on Saturday.
At least 25 people, including the deputy commissioner of Quetta, 14 students of a women’s university and four nurses were killed on Saturday when a bomb tore through a bus, followed by a suicide attack and a gun-battle in the Bolan Medical College hospital, where the injured students were taken for treatment.
Banned outfit Lashkar-i-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the bomb blasts.
An intelligence official, who requested not to be named, told Dawn.com that a female suicide bomber managed to sneak into the university bus. “When all the students gathered inside the bus, she blew herself up”, he said.
Officials said they had no information about the identity of the female suicide bomber.
Moreover, intelligence officials said after the female bomber blew up herself in the bus, a second male bomber followed suit and struck inside the crowded Bolan Medical Complex Hospital to wreak maximum damage.
According to the intelligence personnel, the male suicide bomber was waiting inside BMC Hospital ward for the arrival of high level officials, including the Chief Secretary, and blew up himself when they reached.
Quetta Police Chief Mir Zubair Mehmood also told Dawn.com that the Deputy Commissioner of Quetta Abdul Mansoor Kakar was killed as result of firing outside the hospital.

Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has issued a stern warning to the ringleader of al-Qaeda against the terrorist group’s further intervention in Syria.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) – Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has issued a stern warning to the ringleader of al-Qaeda against the terrorist group’s further intervention in Syria.

Sadr said Monday that Ayman al-Zawahiri needs to stay away from Syria’s affairs and allow Sunnis and Alawites to live peacefully in Syria as they always did.

He condemned al-Qaeda’s killing of Muslims and said the group and its extremist ways have no place in Islamic nations.

Zawahiri recently said that the notorious Al-Nusra Front in Syria “is an independent branch of Al-Qaeda”. The militant group has carried out a range of atrocities in the Arab country.

The remarks by the influential Iraqi cleric come a day after a spate of violent bomb attacks that killed scores of people across Iraq.

Sunday’s blasts began with a parked car bomb which exploded in the city of Kut — 60 kilometers southeast of Baghdad. Six people were killed and 15 others wounded in that attack.

The attack was followed by another car bomb outside the city which targeted construction workers, killing five and wounded 12 others, police officials said.

One of the deadliest attacks took place in the Shia-populated neighborhood of al-Ameen in southeastern Baghdad. Police said a bomber blew himself up inside a cafe, killing at least 11 people and wounding 25 others.

Other attacks were carried out in the cities of Hillah, Madian, Aziziyah, Mahmudiyah, Nasiriyah, Tuz Khurmatu, Najaf, and Basra on Sunday. Reports said that most of the car bombs hit Shia-majority areas.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings, but al-Qaeda-linked militant groups, which seek to destabilize the central government of Iraq, frequently carry out such coordinated attacks.

There has recently been an upsurge in violence across Iraq, and the authorities say Qatar and Saudi Arabia have had a hand in some of the deadly incidents.

The United Nations says a total of 1,045 people were killed and nearly 2,400 were injured in violent incidents in Iraq in the month of May.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said that militant groups and the remnants of the former Ba’athist regime are responsible for the latest wave of violence.

The United Arab Emirates Armed Forces General Headquarters said in a statement that the aircraft went down on Monday, and aviation authorities are inspecting the scene to investigate the causes of the accident.

In early May, a US-made F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet crashed during a training mission in the United Arab Emirates, but both pilots ejected from the plane safely.

Another warplane operated by the United Arab Emirates air force also crashed during a training mission in July 2011. The pilot died in the incident.

In November 2010, a UAE air force jet crashed in the northern emirate of Ras al-Khaimah. The pilot, who also died in the crash, had been on a training mission when his Hawk aircraft came down.

Political prisoners have gone on a hunger strike in Saudi Arabia to protest against their imprisonment without charge or trial, and the horrible jail conditions, Press TV reports.

Activists say more than 70 inmates have stopped eating in a bid to draw international attention to the inhuman prison conditions in Saudi Arabia.

They hope that their protest would prompt an immediate action to stop the gross violation of human rights in Saudi jails.

Saudi activists say there are more than 40,000 political prisoners, mostly prisoners of conscience, in jails across the kingdom.

According to the activists, most of the detained political prisoners are being held by the government without trial or legitimate charges.

Some of the detainees are reported to have been held without trial for more than 16 years. Attempting to incite the public against the ruling regime and the allegiance to foreign entities are usually the ready-made charges against political dissidents in Saudi Arabia.

Families and relatives of political prisoners have held several public gatherings in major cities, including Riyadh, Mecca, Medina and Buraidah. However, their protests have failed to bear any results.

Since February 2011, protesters have held demonstrations on an almost regular basis in Saudi Arabia, mainly in the Qatif region and the town of Awamiyah in Eastern Province, primarily calling for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to widespread discrimination.

However, the demonstrations turned into protests against the repressive Al Saud regime, especially after November 2011, when Saudi security forces killed five protesters and injured many others in the province.

According to Human Rights Watch, the Saudi regime “routinely represses expression critical of the government.”

Syrian army forces have killed a large number of Saudi militants during mop-up operations against armed groups in the strategic city of Aleppo.

On Sunday, a number of Saudi gunmen were killed during intense clashes with Syrian troops in the Kafr Hamra district of Aleppo, situated about 310 kilometers (193 miles) northwest of the capital, Damascus, the official SANA news agency reported.

The development comes as the bodies of 70 Saudi nationals fighting against the Syrian government have been returned to Saudi Arabia.

A Saudi source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the bodies were delivered to the country at King Fahad International Airport in the city of Dammam.

The source said the Saudi regime had sent a number of diplomats to Turkey in order to facilitate the transfer process.

He also said there are currently about 8,000 Saudi nationals in Syria fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Additionally, Syrian troops clashed with militants affiliated to the terrorist group al-Nusra Front near Aleppo’s Kilikia Association, Maaret al-Artik and Einjara School. Dozens of gunmen were killed in the heavy exchange of fire. Two 23mm anti-aircraft guns and a number of heavy machineguns were destroyed.

A terrorist hideout was also raided by the Syrian forces in the village of Daret Azza, and several gunmen were killed.

Meanwhile, Syrian troops inflicted heavy losses on terrorists during offensives on the outskirts of Damascus.

Syrian troops clashed with militants in the town of al-Ahmadia, killing and injuring a number of them.

Government forces also stormed a terrorist hideout in the city of Douma, located about 10 kilometers (six miles) northeast of Damascus, and shot dead scores of militants.

In clashes between the Syrian troops and militants in the city of al-Zabadani, a Takfiri militant commander, identified as Suleiman Tinawi, was killed.

A unit of the Syrian army also attacked gunmen in the town of Babila, where a large amount of arms and munitions was destroyed, and the leader of a local militant group, Amer Rashwan, was killed.

Syrian troops also engaged al-Nusra militants in the town of al-Hajar al-Aswad.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers, have been killed in the violence.

On June 14, Louay Meqdad, a representative of the so-called Free Syrian Army, said the terrorist group will ask for tanks, warplanes and other heavy weapons during an upcoming meeting with US and Western officials in Turkey.

“We are going to ask them directly and clearly that we need tanks and the air jets, all weapons that they can offer us,” the representative stated.

President Assad said in May that militants from as many as 29 different countries were fighting against the government in different parts of the country.

Gunmen have killed at least four Shia Muslims in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa valley near the border with Syria, Lebanese security sources say.

“Gunmen killed three members of the Jaafar family and a man from the Amhaz family as they were passing through the Qaa area of the Bekaa,” the unnamed security source said on Sunday.

According to the reports, a fifth man was also seriously injured in the attack.

Although the gunmen remain unidentified, foreign-backed so-called Free Syrian Army militants fighting the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad have been infiltrating through the border with Syria firing rockets at residents of the heavily Shia populated region.

On Wednesday, the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched at least four rockets into Bekaa Valley.

Also, on June 5, the foreign-backed militants launched at least twelve Grad rockets on Baalbek, wounding at least one child.

The region is a stronghold of the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah.

On June 15, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman called on the army to pursue the attackers responsible for firing a number of rockets at the border towns and villages of Bekaa Valley.

The Syria crisis began in mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.

The first attack was carried out in the town of Taji, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, on Monday, when a bomb went off in a restaurant. Seven people including two women and a 12-year-old child died in the bombing.

In Fallujah, west of Baghdad, three people were killed in another bomb attack. Nineteen people were wounded.

On Sunday, over 50 people lost their lives and dozens more sustained injuries in a day of carnage across Iraq.

Other attacks were carried out in the cities of Hillah, Madian, Aziziyah, Mahmudiyah, Nasiriyah, Tuz Khurmatu, Najaf, Mosul, Basra and the neighborhood of al-Ameen in southeastern Baghdad. Reports said most of the bombings hit mainly Shia populated areas.

On May 30, UN Ambassador to Iraq Martin Kobler warned that “systemic violence is ready to explode at any moment.”

He also urged Iraqi political leaders to “engage immediately to pull the country out of this mayhem.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said that militant groups and the remnants of the former Ba’athist regime are responsible for the latest wave of violence.
